Aa! This type of chunky, rough, lava is found at Craters of the Moon National Monument near Arco. June is little too late for penstemons there. However the unique volcanic features and scenery are worth a side trip any time. Kids and grandkids ~love this place too. It is "out of this world"! There are plenty of nice footpaths too.
