 Earthquake Fault North of Mackay
The bare area in the center of this picture shows vertical displacement of an earthquake fault north of Mackay, Idaho. Fortunately, such events are rare. Photo taken from the Earthquake Fault Interpretative Area --not penstemons, but this is a worthwhile stop on your way to Doublesprings Pass. A couple of miles further along this road, you can find such delights as Penstemon eriantherus.

Note: page is under construction: be sure to check back!

Idaho Mountain Wildflowers A goldmine of resources, including a bibliography, this is the page of author and wildflower photographer Dr. Scott Earle. Idaho Mountain Wildflowers: A Photographic Compendium is available from Larkspur Books 2001, 224 pages, 9" x 9", hardcover, index. This is the book on which the above web-site is based. It includes over 300 color images of wildflowers native to the mountains of Idaho. The illustrations are accompanied by a description of each flower, its family, growth habits, history, the derivation of common and scientific names, and notes on economic and medicinal uses. A final, "how to do it," chapter is devoted to wildflower photography. This is not a formal flora or field guide, but it is very lovely and very handy! There is a link to instructions for ordering this book on the above page.

Northwest Penstemons by Dee Strickler. 1997 ISBN 1-56044-572-6 The Flower Press 192 Larch Lane, Columbia Falls MT 59912 or Falcon, P.O. Box 1718 Helena, MT 59624 With helpful details, this is THE penstemon specialty book for the area. You can search for copies on the web too.

Idaho Transportation Department maintains a wildflower page here. It emphasizes roadside flowers, but is quite useful, with plentiful thumbnail pictures.

University of Idaho Stillinger Herbarium has a searchable data base. It is not arranged for browsing, but is useful for specific queries

The American Penstemon Society thanks theIdaho Native Plant Society! We are very appreciative of help from the Wood River Chapter.

Highway planting Penstemon palmeri
Penstemon palmeri is found as a highway planting. This one is a very determined grower: note the interesting crook in its stem.

USFS campgrounds are designed for self-sufficient camping; USFS campgrounds do not offer trailer hookups for water, sewer, or power. Because of heavy winter snows, most area campgrounds are open only from mid-May through Labor Day.

Visit the Mackay Page for a listing of lodging and loads of information.

Basic Schedule:
Note: Schedule is subject to factors that effect bloom times such as winter snow and spring weather. We have lots of choices for wildflower viewing and penstemon-stalking. Schedule will be "fine-tuned" according to bloom reports and pre-meeting scouting results. All prospective areas take us away from food or fuel stops. Be sure to gas-up and provision (lunch-munchies, water, and gear) before departing for the wilds! Any changes will be announced on Friday and Saturday.

Friday, June 22  Dinner at Bridge Street Grill in Lower Stanley (208 774-2208) Introductory talk at Redfish Lake Visitor Center. At Mile Post 185 on Highway 75, south of Stanley, follow sign and drive west 2 miles. Opportunity to shop at bookstore, which stocks such goodies as local guide books, nature books, postcards, hiking and forest maps. Introductory talk by naturalist and interpretative assistant Bernice Hartz, who frequently leads wildflower hikes in the area.
Friday night  Stay in Stanley or Lower Stanley. Each participant is responsible for arranging their own accommodations.
Saturday June 23  Breakfast at "The Bakery" (Stanley Baking Co.) is recommended. They open at 7AM! You can also purchase something to munch on for lunch. Meet at 8:30 AM at the Redfish Lake Trailhead parking lot to carpool. At Mile Post 185.on Highway 75, follow sign and drive west 2 miles. Trailhead is on the North (right) side of the road.
Saturday, mid-afternoon  Travel via Hwy 75 south to Ketchum, allowing for penstemon stops and time to check in to your lodging in Ketchum/Sun Valley area.
Saturday evening  6:00 PM Chinese Buffet Group Dinner at Pandas 515 East Avenue North, Ketchum
Saturday Night  Stay in Ketchum/Sun Valley area
Sunday, June 24 Morning  8:30 meet in Ketchum, depending upon bloom TBA, probably the Lake Creek Trailhead on the west side of Hwy. 75 in Ketchum
Sunday day  Exploring Wood River Valley and surrounding area. bring lunch, water, and gear.
Sunday 5:00 PM  Meet at Sawtooth Botanical Garden for a tour, an Italian buffet, APS annual meeting. We will have a short meeting, followed by a talk by Dr. Andrea Wolfe, who will bring us up-to-date on her penstemon research. Note: parking is limited at the garden, please carpool where possible.
Sunday night  Stay in Ketchum or Sun Valley, unless you are on a tight schedule and a night owl who must head out. It is a three-hour drive to Boise from here.
"after trip" Monday June 25 ff  Optional "after trip" to Mackay, possibly via Trail Creek road. Be sure to gas up in Ketchum. I also suggest you purchase some totable lunch foods such as food bars, or some peanut butter and fixings and some fruit and packable beverages. Mackay does not have a grocery that opens early. This is a rough road, not recommended for rental cars. Four-wheel drive is not necessary, but a stout vehicle, good tires, and some "back road" skill is. Alternative paved route passes by Craters of the Moon National Monument and through Arco. Most likely, flowers will be past bloom at the Monument, but it is an interesting geologic stop --out of this world; kids young and old love it!. Good wildflower sites near Mackay do not require four-wheel drive, but roads are mostly gravel. Pass Creek Summit, though botanically rich, is a one-way road with SMALL turnouts. Close car caravaning will not be practical. Double Springs Pass road is a little better, but still tricky. Spreading out and being more self-sufficient is still a MUST. Spring thunderstorms can quickly turn any of these unpaved roads into a quagmire capable of trapping ANY vehicle. Watch the weather! This part of the trek is recommended for the intrepid and self-sufficient only.
Monday night  Stay in Mackay. or Arco. Group order-from-the menu dinner can be arranged at Garden Patch Pizza 4243 Hwy 93 Mackay, ID 83251 Phone: 208-588-2621
Tuesday June 26  Explore Mackay. Local APS member Patty Slayton has loads of ideas and will help us. Plan on a breakfast (not included in registration) at Amy Lou's Steakhouse 503 W. Custer St. Mackay, ID 83251 Phone: 208-588-3185

Though we will be a bit early for wild carnivorous plants, central Idaho bogs and fens hold many surprises. If we have an early spring, some fascinating finds, such as sundews in warm spots, are possible. In any case, Idaho Fen-Hopping is a wonderful page by CP expert and author (a new book!)
